Eu estava
conversando com meu marido, Alexandre, sobre a fome no mundo.
A

I was
talking to my husband, Alexandre, on world hunger.
The
television, food manufacturing companies and the government, especially here in
Brazil, insist on showing advertisements on products that contain excess sugar,
fat and sodium, our government preaches about ending hunger.
But with
so much food calorie people are gaining more weight and consequently diseases
such as clogging of arteries and veins, backaches, digestive problems and a lot
of terrible things that destroy our bodies.
At the
same time, people who live in northeastern Brazil, where there are drought -
the worst in 40 years, if I'm not mistaken - are dying of hunger and thirst,
their crops and their animals languishing and being decimated day after day, no
money to buy food for the family, let alone for the animals, covering the soil
with their corpses dry roasted.
Meanwhile,
beer commercials, icy ... Mc Donnalds with their hoagies and delicious.
I'm sad
to see such divergent realities.
I have
nothing against the industry, or the government of my country, just do not
understand why a major industry or own country's government does nothing. It
does not help these people, not open an artesian well, not even sends A water
truck to help the suffering people.

Drought in the Northeast is the worst in 50 years,
affecting 22 million
Brazil 25/04/2013 at 12:56
The drought in the semiarid region are endless and it is the worst recorded in the last 50 years.According to the federal government, 1,415 municipalities suffer and now affects the lives of nearly 22 million Brazilians. The lack of rain reaches more than 90% of municipalities in the semiarid and exceeded the extent of 1,135 cities that comprise it.
The National Secretariat of Civil Defence have declared an emergency and a state of emergency in 1,046 municipalities. The area most affected by drought spans eight states in the Northeast (Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte and Sergipe), and the north of Minas Gerais, with a total land area of more than 980 sq. km.
The farmer José Alirio de Macedo, 61, resident of rural Petrolina (PE) that has so far only rained 28 millimeters (mm) in the region where you live. The rainy season in the city, beginning in December and can extend into May, has an average of 530 mm.Despite the current drought, the farmer cultivates beans, maize and sorghum to feed his little flock.
"The situation is ugly.If God has no compassion, no one will be left with nothing. And the most critical period has not started yet, which is August forward.Last year did not plant anything because of the drought.Never saw two straight years without rain, as is already happening. "
With the frequent problems caused by drought, Macedo spent 14 years working in São Paulo. The six children survived and were in town, but the farmer and his wife returned to the backcountry."The citizen gets old and wants to be close to their origins."
The gravity of the situation led the federal government to invest U.S. $ 32 billion in so-called structural works, ensuring water supply permanently as dams, canals, aqueducts and pumping stations. Also, announced earlier this month additional $ 9 billion in actions to combat the drought.
The prediction is that each municipality affected by drought receive a backhoe, one grader, two trucks (one bucket, and a kite) and a loader. The Government will also distribute 340,000 tons of corn by the end of May to be sold to farmers at subsidized prices.
For the general coordinator of the NGO Caatinga, Giovanne Xenophon reality Semiarid is attenuated with the income transfer programs of the federal government, such as Bolsa Familia and Harvest Guarantee.
"It's either that, even with the worst drought in 50 years, we're not seeing that traditionally occurred in past droughts: invasions and looting of families in the region. So this is the scenario. On one hand we have a much more vulnerable on the other we have some government actions that mitigate the situation. "
The coordinator cites the crisis of the local economy as a consequence of prolonged drought. In addition to high food prices in the region due to a drop in production, the animals that survive drought lost their market value and can be sold for up to half the price.
"The families are farmers without capital, they lost their savings [the flock].They had to sell (these animals) because of drought and [charged] a price well below what is normally marketed. "
According to Xenophon, all this has a strong impact on trade, because we are in a region largely agricultural."And when you have such a drought that affects agricultural families, all trade feels. We note a standstill, a slowdown in the economy. What has kept rents are actually government programs, "he argues.
